Notice Periods in Switzerland

How much notice is an employee required to give when resigning in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, the notice period an employee is required to give upon resignation is determined by the employment agreement or any applicable collective agreement. If no specific notice period is outlined, the statutory notice periods are as follows:

  • During the probationary period: 7 calendar days
  • During the first year of employment: 1 month
  • From the second through ninth year of employment: 2 months
  • From the tenth year onward: 3 months

After the probationary period, the notice typically takes effect at the end of a month. Fixed-term employment agreements generally cannot be terminated early unless permitted by the agreement, mutually agreed upon by the parties, or if there is a serious cause for termination.
