Once your business crosses a sales tax threshold in a state or country, you'll need to register there before you can legally collect and remit tax. Kintsugi flags these situations automatically β this guide shows you how to act on them in a few clicks.
π‘ Registration requests are available on all paid plans. If you're on a free plan, you'll see an upgrade prompt when you try to submit one.
Time to complete: About 2 minutes. Once submitted, our Operations team typically completes registration within a few business days, depending on the jurisdiction.
"Nexus" just means your business has a tax obligation in a jurisdiction β usually triggered by sales volume, transaction count, or physical presence. Kintsugi shows you this in two places:
Dashboard Tab
The βExposure Mapβ a visual guide highlighting every state or country where you're "Exposed" (nexus met, registration not yet started).
Monitoring Tab
The "Exposed" has the list view of the same jurisdictions, with more detail per line item.
Jurisdictions highlighted in salmon pink with an EXPOSED status have met nexus and need registration. This is your cue to act.
You can kick this off from either the Dashboard or the Monitoring tab β they lead to the same place.
If you have pending registrations, they'll show up under Pending Tasks β Registrations to Finish. Click Review to jump straight into the Monitoring tab.
Click Monitoring in the left sidebar, find the jurisdiction you want to register in, and click its Register or Review button.
If you see a Review button, you'll land on the jurisdiction's "Review Collected Tax Nexus" page first β check the details, then click Register.
If you see a Register button directly, you'll skip straight to the request form below.
A Request Registration pop-up will appear. Confirm or fill in:
Country and jurisdiction β pre-filled based on where you're exposed.
Nexus met date β double-check this is accurate.
Registration email β the inbox your Operations contact will use.
Notes β add anything your Operations team should know (e.g., a preferred registration date or special business circumstances).
Click Save to submit.
Your request goes straight to Kintsugi's Operations team β no additional action needed from you right now.
You'll be notified as registration progresses, and the jurisdiction's status will update once it's complete.
Keep an eye on your inbox: Operations may reach out with a quick question. Responding promptly keeps things moving.
Nexus and registration also apply to non-US jurisdictions (Canada, EU member states, and others). The steps above work the same way. If a country requires a plan upgrade or extra setup before you can register, you'll see an Upgrade or Talk to Sales prompt instead of a Register button β see International Registration Unlock Process for what that means and how to proceed.
Prepare necessary documentation in advance to expedite the registration process.
Set reminders to check the dashboard weekly for any changes in nexus status.
Do not delay in responding to the Kintsugi team once they reach out regarding registration.
Q: How long does registration actually take?
A: Processing times vary by state but you will be notified when your registration is now active.
Q: I don't see a Register or Review button for a jurisdiction I know I'm exposed in β what's wrong?
A: Double check you're on a paid plan β free plans don't include registration requests. If you are on a paid plan and still don't see the button, reach out to support so we can check your account.
Q: Can I register in a state before I've technically met nexus (voluntary registration)?
A: Yes β that's a separate flow. See How to Register in a State Where You Haven't Met Nexus.
Q: I submitted a request β how do I check its status?
A: Check the Monitoring tab; the jurisdiction's status will update as Operations processes it.
Q: What if my details (nexus date, email) were wrong when I submitted?
A: Contact support with the correct details and we'll update the request before it's processed.β
