How to Collect and View Customer Tax IDs from Shopify Using the Helium Customer Fields Plugin

If you need to collect tax ID numbers from your customers in Shopify (for example, for B2B sales or tax-exempt verification), you can use the Helium Customer Fields app to easily set this up.

This guide walks you through how to:

  • Add a Tax ID field to your customer form

  • Allow customers to submit their tax ID

  • View the submitted tax ID in your Shopify admin


What You’ll Need

  • Your Shopify store Admin Access

  • The Helium Customer Fields app installed
    → Install it from the Shopify App Store if you haven’t already


Step 1: Add a Custom “Tax ID” Field

  1. In your Shopify Admin, go to Apps > Helium Customer Fields.

  2. Click Data Columns in the sidebar.

  1. Click Add data column.

  1. Fill in the details:

  • Label: Tax ID

  • Namespace: customer_fields

  • Key: tax_id

  • Data type: Text

(Optional) Toggle on Add to favorites so it’s easier to find later.

Click Save.

This creates a custom field where customer tax ID info will be stored.


Step 2: Add the Field to a Customer Form

Now you’ll make sure customers can enter their tax ID during sign-up or in their account.

Navigation: Forms > Get Started > Legacy Customer Form

  1. In the Helium app, go to Forms.

  2. Click Get Started to create a new form.

  3. Choose Legacy Customer Form.

  4. Name your form something like “Customer Details Form”.

  1. Choose Default in the Account Options.

  1. Under Template, select B2B / Wholesale.

  1. Click Continue.

Step 3: Add the Tax ID Input to the Form

  1. In the Taxes and Terms section of the form builder, edit the Field Label by typing "TAX ID".

  1. Ensure that the Data Column is set to the following:

  • Label: TAX ID

  • Namespace: customer_fields

  • Key: tax_id

  • Data Type: text

  1. Click Continue to move to the next step.

Step 4: Install the Form

Select the Shopify theme where you'd like the form to appear and click Done

Once the form is live, customers will be able to enter their tax ID when registering or updating their account.


Step 5: View Collected Tax IDs

To view a customer’s tax ID:

  1. In Shopify Admin, go to Apps > Helium Customer Fields.

  1. Open the Customers tab.

  1. Select a customer.

  1. You’ll now see that there's a Tax ID field. This field is now available for your customers to fill in. You can also edit the field if needed.

That’s it!

You’ve now set up a way to collect and view tax IDs from your customers directly in Shopify using Helium. This is especially useful for handling tax-exempt customers or wholesale B2B buyers.
