North Dakota Credentials for Importing Registration

How to locate the state-issued credentials required for importing your North Dakota registration.
Updated yesterday

To import your existing North Dakota sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need to provide a few details issued by the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner when you registered your business. North Dakota manages its tax accounts through the North Dakota Taxpayer Access Point (ND TAP), the state's online portal for filing, paying, and managing business taxes. Once imported, Kintsugi can manage your North Dakota sales tax filings.

Required Credentials

When importing an existing North Dakota sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need the following:

  • FEIN

  • Account Type

  • Account Number

  • Letter ID

What's My FEIN?

Your FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number) is the federal tax ID number assigned to your business by the IRS. If you are a sole proprietor without an EIN, you may use your Social Security Number (SSN) instead. North Dakota uses this number to identify your business entity in ND TAP.

Where to find it

You can find your FEIN in any of the following places:

  • IRS EIN confirmation letter. When your FEIN was issued, the IRS sent a confirmation letter (CP 575) with your number.

  • Prior federal tax filings. Your FEIN appears on any federal business tax return you've filed.

  • Your ND TAP account. Log in at tap.tax.nd.gov and review your business profile to confirm the identification number on file.

What's My Account Type?

Your Account Type is the category of tax account you are registered under with the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner (e.g., Sales and Use Tax).

Where to find it

You can find your Account Type in any of the following places:

  • Your ND TAP account. Log in at tap.tax.nd.gov and view the account summary on your home page. Your Account Type is listed alongside your account details.

  • Your North Dakota sales tax permit or registration confirmation. The tax type you registered for is referenced on any documentation issued to you at the time of registration.

What's My Account Number?

Your Account Number is the specific tax account number assigned to your business by the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner upon approval of your sales tax registration.

Where to find it

You can find your Account Number in any of the following places:

  • Your ND TAP account. Log in at tap.tax.nd.gov, click the Account ID link on your home page, and locate the Account Number on your account details page.

  • Your North Dakota sales tax permit. The Account Number is included on the permit mailed or emailed to you after your registration was approved.

  • North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner correspondence. Any notices or letters from the Tax Commissioner's office will reference your Account Number.

What's My Letter ID?

A Letter ID is a unique identifier printed on correspondence issued by the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner. It is used to verify your identity and link you to your tax account. Your Letter ID begins with “L” followed by 10 digits. Example: L0123456789

⚠️ Important: Your ND TAP authorization code letter is not acceptable for this purpose. You must use a Letter ID from a separate piece of correspondence issued on your account.

Where to find it

You can find your Letter ID in any of the following places:

  • North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner notices or letters. Any correspondence mailed to you by the Tax Commissioner's office will include a Letter ID printed on the document.

  • Your ND TAP account. Log in at tap.tax.nd.gov, navigate to your account, and go to the ‘Letters’ section. Check your correspondence history for letters that include a Letter ID.

Next Step

Once you provide the required credentials, Kintsugi will initiate the third-party access request. You do not need to validate or approve the request separately, as Kintsugi will complete this step on your behalf.

Once access is confirmed, Kintsugi can continue with the registration import setup in the app.
