Massachusetts Credentials for Importing Registration

How to locate the state-issued credentials required for importing your Massachusetts registration.
Updated 2 days ago

To import your existing Massachusetts sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need to provide a few details issued by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) when you registered your business. Massachusetts manages its tax accounts through MassTaxConnect, the state's secure online portal for filing, paying, and managing business taxes. Once imported, Kintsugi can manage your Massachusetts sales tax filings through AutoPilot.

Required Credentials

When importing an existing Massachusetts sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need the following:

  • Registered Business Name

  • FEIN

What's My Registered Business Name?

Your Registered Business Name is the official legal business name you provided to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue when you registered for your sales tax permit.

Where to find it

You can find your registered business name in any of the following places:

  • Your Massachusetts sales tax registration certificate. Once approved, you will receive a mailed registration certificate depending on the tax(es) you registered for. Your registered business name appears on this certificate.

  • Your MassTaxConnect account. Log in at mtc.dor.state.ma.us and review your business profile or account information to confirm the name on file.

  • Massachusetts DOR correspondence. Any notices, letters, or account-related communications from the Massachusetts DOR will reference your registered business name.

What's My FEIN?

Your FEIN is the nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify your business for federal tax purposes. It is usually formatted as XX-XXXXXXX (e.g., 12-3456789).

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue requires your FEIN when registering a business through MassTaxConnect, the state's online tax portal. Businesses that do not yet have a FEIN must obtain one directly from the IRS before completing their Massachusetts tax registration.

Where to find it

You can find your FEIN in any of the following places:

  • Massachusetts registration paperwork (look for this number under labels such as Federal Employer Identification Number, FEIN, EIN, or Federal Tax ID Number)

  • Your IRS EIN confirmation notice (CP 575 letter)

  • Prior federal business tax returns

  • Business bank account records

  • State or local license applications where you previously used the number

  • Agencies where you applied for business licenses or permits

Next Step

Once you provide the required credentials, Kintsugi will initiate the third-party access request. You do not need to validate or approve the request separately, as Kintsugi will complete this step on your behalf.

Once access is confirmed, Kintsugi can continue with the registration import setup in the app.
