Texas Webfile Number: RT vs. XT

Know the difference between the RT and XT Webfile Numbers
Updated last month

A Texas Webfile Number is a state-issued access code used to connect a taxpayer account to the Texas Comptroller’s Webfile system. The Comptroller describes it as a Personal Identification Code, or access code, needed to file and pay taxes or fees through Webfile. It is typically printed on tax reports and notices mailed by the Texas Comptroller.

For Texas registration import, the Webfile Number helps verify access to the taxpayer’s state account and allows Kintsugi to identify the correct tax account information for import.

A Texas Webfile Number is usually formatted as two letters followed by six digits, such as:

  • RT123456

  • XT123456

RT vs. XT Webfile Numbers

It is important to enter the correct Webfile Number type. Texas may issue different Webfile Numbers for different tax purposes.

RT Webfile Number

The RT number begins with RT followed by six digits. The Texas Comptroller states that RT numbers are used for taxes and fees other than franchise tax. For sales tax-related access, this is the Webfile Number customers should look for.

XT Webfile Number

The XT number begins with XT followed by six digits. The Texas Comptroller states that XT numbers are used for franchise tax reports. This number should not be used when the registration import is for Texas sales tax.

Note: Do not enter an XT Webfile Number for Texas sales tax registration import. The XT number is associated with the Texas franchise tax, while the RT number is the Webfile Number needed for sales tax-related access. Entering the wrong prefix may prevent Kintsugi from locating or importing the correct Texas sales tax registration information.

Where to find the Webfile Number

Customers can usually find their Webfile Number on correspondence from the Texas Comptroller. The Comptroller notes that Webfile Numbers are printed on returns and notices mailed to the taxpayer.

RT numbers are printed in the upper left margin of the return, while XT numbers are printed on franchise tax notification letters and franchise tax delinquent notices.

If the customer cannot locate their Webfile Number, the Texas Comptroller provides support through its automated phone system at (800) 442-3453, which may provide the Webfile Number after the customer verifies confidential information from a previously filed report.
