How to Stop or Delay a Sales and Use Tax Payment

This article explains the timeframe and specific steps required to stop or delay a sales tax payment.
Updated 2 months ago

We get it—sometimes cash flow needs a little breathing room, or you need an extra moment to review your data before the funds leave your account. While our system is designed for "set it and forget it" automation, you do have options to hit the brakes if needed.

Here is the breakdown of how to manage, pause, or delay a payment depending on where we are in the filing cycle.

1. The "Golden Window" (Before Auto-Approval)

The absolute best and safest time to delay a payment is before the 5th of the month.

  • The Cycle: Kintsugi auto-generates your filings on the 1st of the month. These filings sit in a "pending" state for your review until they are auto-approved on the 5th.

  • The Action: If you know you need to delay a payment, you can pause the filing directly in the Kintsugi app anytime between the 1st and the 5th.

  • The Result: Pausing prevents the filing from being locked, submitted to the state, and triggering an ACH debit.

Check out our guide: How to Pause a Filing to Prevent Auto-Approval for step-by-step instructions.

2. After the Filing has been Submitted

If the 5th has passed and the filing has already been submitted to the state, stopping a payment becomes significantly more difficult.

  • The 2-Day Window: There is typically a 2-business-day window before the ACH debit is fully processed by the banking system. If you contact us immediately, we will do our best to intercept the payment before this window closes.

  • The "Not Guaranteed" Policy: While we will move as fast as possible to stop a payment, this is not guaranteed. If the return has already been processed by the state tax authority, we are technically unable to pause, reverse, or "claw back" the payment.

3. A Note on Custom Debit Dates

Do you have a custom debit date configured in your settings?

  • Manual Updates Required: If you have set a specific date for your tax payments to be pulled, our system will not automatically shift that date if you pause a filing.

  • The Process: You (or your Kintsugi manager) would need to manually log into the specific State Tax Authority portal to adjust the scheduled payment date.
