Before you can start collecting and remitting VAT in the Bahamas, you need to complete your registration with the Department of Inland Revenue (DIR). Preparing your documents in advance makes the process smoother and faster.
NOTE | The Bahamas does not require a local fiscal representative for non-resident businesses. You can apply directly with the DIR. |
The following documents are generally required to register for VAT in the Bahamas under the Standard Registration scheme. Requirements may vary depending on your entity type, so always confirm the current list with the DIR or your tax advisor.
Completed VAT registration application form (available from the DIR)
Proof of business name and legal status (e.g., certificate of incorporation, business license, or trade name registration)
Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or equivalent identification
Description of the nature of business activities
Estimated or actual annual taxable turnover
Proof of physical business address in the Bahamas
Contact details for the authorized signatory
Bank account details for VAT refund purposes (if applicable)
Proof of business registration in the country of incorporation
Description of digital or electronic services provided to Bahamian customers
Contact details of the responsible person or authorized representative
Confirmation that no physical presence exists in the Bahamas
If you are a resident non-digital business registering voluntarily (below the BSD 100,000 threshold), include documentation showing your current taxable turnover and confirmation that you wish to register voluntarily.
Flat Rate Accounting Scheme | If you are a resident business considering the Flat Rate Accounting Scheme (for turnover at or below BSD 400,000), you must apply separately and receive approval from the Comptroller before this scheme takes effect. This scheme is not currently supported in Kintsugi's current version. |
Once your VAT registration is approved, you will receive a VAT registration number from the DIR. This number must appear on all VAT invoices you issue to customers. Your registration effective date determines when your first tax period begins and when your first return is due.
Kintsugi guides you through the registration process by:
Identifying when registration is required based on your transaction activity
