Explaining South Korea VAT Jurisdictions

Updated 2 months ago

Understanding how tax jurisdictions work in South Korea is the first step toward getting your VAT compliance right. The good news: South Korea keeps things straightforward with a single, national-level VAT system.

How Jurisdictions Work in South Korea

South Korea operates on a federal (national) jurisdiction only. VAT is imposed at the country level by the National Tax Service (NTS). There are no state, provincial, or municipal VAT layers — one registration covers your entire South Korea VAT obligation.

This is different from countries like the United States, where businesses must manage sales tax obligations across multiple state and local jurisdictions.

Tax Jurisdiction vs. Address Jurisdiction in Kintsugi

In Kintsugi, you will encounter two types of jurisdictions:

Tax jurisdiction refers to the jurisdiction where you register to collect and remit taxes. For South Korea, this is simply "Federal" — one registration with the NTS covers all South Korean sales.

Address jurisdiction refers to what appears in address drop-down menus within the platform. For South Korea, this is listed as "South Korea" at the country level.

How Taxability Is Determined

Because VAT in South Korea operates at the national level, taxability for any transaction is determined based on the country — not a region, city, or province. There are no special tax rate regions within South Korea.

A standard South Korean address follows this format:

Building number, Street name, District, City, Province, Postal code Example: 101 Gangnam-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, 06123, South Korea

What This Means for You

When you set up South Korea in Kintsugi, you register once at the federal level. All South Korean transactions are calculated and reported under that single registration — no sub-jurisdiction mapping required.
