Michigan Credentials for Importing Registration

How to locate the state-issued credentials required for importing your Michigan registration.
Updated 2 days ago

To import your existing Michigan sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need to provide a few details issued by the Michigan Department of Treasury when you registered your business. Michigan manages its tax accounts through Michigan Treasury Online (MTO), the state's online portal for filing, paying, and managing business taxes. Once imported, Kintsugi can manage your Michigan sales tax filings.

Required Credentials

When importing an existing Michigan sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need the following:

  • Official Business Name Registered with the State

  • Login Credentials (username/email & password)

  • Business Registration Info (NAICS code, entity type, filing frequency, etc.)

What's My Official Business Name Registered with the State?

Your Official Business Name is the legal business name you provided to the Michigan Department of Treasury when you registered for your sales tax account.

Where to find it

You can find your registered business name in any of the following places:

  • Your Michigan Sales Tax License. When a taxpayer registers, the Michigan Department of Treasury issues a Sales Tax License. Your registered business name appears on this license.

  • Your Michigan Treasury Online (MTO) account. Log in at michigan.gov/taxes and review your business profile or account information to confirm the name on file.

  • Michigan Department of Treasury correspondence. Any notices, letters, or account-related communications from the Michigan Department of Treasury will reference your registered business name.

What Are My Login Credentials?

Your Login Credentials are the username (or email address) and password you use to access your Michigan Treasury Online (MTO) account. Kintsugi uses these to connect to your MTO account and retrieve your registration details.

Where to find them

  • Your MTO account username/email. This is the email address or username you used when creating your MTO account at michigan.gov/taxes.

  • Your MTO password. This is the password associated with your MTO account. If you've forgotten it, you can reset it from the MTO login page.

⚠️ Important: If you don't yet have an MTO account, you'll need to create one at michigan.gov/taxes before proceeding. Your MTO account must be linked to your Michigan sales tax account.

What's My Business Registration Info?

Your Business Registration Info includes several details on file with the Michigan Department of Treasury that describe how your business is structured and how it files taxes. This may include your NAICS code, entity type, filing frequency, and other account details.

Where to find it

You can find your Business Registration Info in any of the following places:

  • Your Michigan Treasury Online (MTO) account. Log in at michigan.gov/taxes, navigate to your sales tax account, and review your account profile or registration details. Your NAICS code, entity type, and filing frequency are typically listed here.

  • Your Michigan Sales Tax License. Some registration details, such as your filing frequency, may appear on the Sales Tax License issued to you by the Michigan Department of Treasury.

  • Michigan Department of Treasury correspondence. Letters or notices from the Michigan Department of Treasury related to your sales tax account may include your filing frequency and other registration details.

  • Your business formation documents. Your entity type (e.g., LLC, Corporation, Sole Proprietor) can be confirmed through the documents filed with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) when your business was formed.

⚠️ Important: The business registration details you provide must match the information on file with the Michigan Department of Treasury.
