Troubleshooting Tax Calculation Issues in BigCommerce

Learn how to resolve common tax calculation issues between BigCommerce and Kintsugi by verifying address configuration and understanding how address data flows between systems.
Updated 5 months ago

Overview

Tax calculations in Kintsugi depend on complete and accurate data provided by BigCommerce. When required address details are missing or misconfigured, tax estimates may not appear or may calculate incorrectly. This article outlines the most common causes and the steps to remediate them efficiently.

Check your Ship From address in BigCommerce

A valid Ship From address is required for BigCommerce to send tax estimation requests to Kintsugi. If taxes are missing or incorrect:

  • Verify that a Ship From address is configured in your BigCommerce store settings

  • Confirm the address is fully completed and saved (not left in draft or partially filled)

  • Retry an invoice or transaction after saving the address to trigger a new tax estimation request

Once the Ship From address is properly set, BigCommerce will resume sending tax estimation calls to Kintsugi, and tax calculations should populate as expected.

Address Updates and Sync Behavior

Address validation, edits, or additions made within Kintsugi only affect data stored in Kintsugi. These updates do not sync back to BigCommerce.

If you encounter missing or incorrect address data:

  • Update the address directly in BigCommerce, which is the source system

  • Review your BigCommerce checkout and order settings to ensure full address details are captured for future transactions

Keeping address data accurate in the source system helps ensure consistent tax calculations and minimizes downstream discrepancies.
