How to Deregister from Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) State Registrations

How to close out your SST registrations
Updated 27 days ago

Why you might be doing this

Most customers land on this article for one reason: they're switching from an SST-managed provider (a Certified Service Provider, or CSP, like Avalara) to Kintsugi. Kintsugi isn't a CSP. We file directly with each state, so your SST registrations need to be closed and replaced with standard state accounts before Kintsugi can take over filing.

If that's you, this article covers the SSTRS side of the process. For more info, see Transitioning from SST to Kintsugi.

If you're switching to Kintsugi: Mind the deadline

Your current CSP locks in each month's filings on the 1st of the month. To avoid a duplicate filing or a missed period, submit your SST deregistration by the 20th of the month before Kintsugi is scheduled to start.

Example: For Kintsugi to handle your May filings, deregister by April 20th.

Missed the window? That's okay. Just reach out to us and let's discuss about adjusting your start date rather than rushing the deregistration.

Before you begin

  • You'll need access to your SST account.

  • Under contract with a CSP? You can't modify or end registrations directly? Your CSP has to do this for you. Reach out to them first.

  • Make sure all returns due through your deregistration date will still get filed (by you or your current provider).

Quick definitions: CSP = Certified Service Provider (a company that files on your behalf under SST, like Avalara). SSTRS = the SST Registration System, the portal where all of this happens.

Step 1: Log in to the SST Portal

  1. Log in to SSTRS using your SST credentials.

Step 2: Choose How You Want to Deregister

Option A:
End registration in specific states

Option B:
End registration in all states

Choose this if...

You want to stay registered in some states and exit others

You're leaving SST entirely (e.g., moving fully to Kintsugi)

Proceed with the option that aligns with your operational strategy.

Option A: End Registration in Specific States Only

Use this if you want to remain registered in some states while exiting others.

1. Access State Registrations

From the Main Menu, click Edit State Registrations.

Under contract with a CSP? The system will block this change, kindly contact your CSP instead.

2. Unregister From a State

  1. Under the Register column, uncheck the box next to the state you want to deregister.

  2. In the prompt that appears for each state:

    • Enter your Last Day of Sales for that state. This can't be earlier than your original registration date.

    • Still need a sales tax license in that state, just not through SST? Check "I need a sales tax registration for this state."

  3. Repeat for any additional states.

  4. Scroll down and click Submit.

Compliance reminder: Making sales in a state where you're not properly registered, collecting, or remitting tax can result in penalties. If you checked "I need a sales tax registration for this state," make sure that direct registration is in place before your SST coverage ends.

Option B: End Registration in All SST States

Use this if you no longer want any registrations managed through SST.

1. Start Full Deregistration

From the Main Menu, click End Registration in ALL States.

Screenshot 2026-01-30 at 9.03.32 AM.png

Under contract with a CSP? You'll need to contact them directly to proceed.

2. Complete the Deregistration Form

  1. Enter the End Date for all Streamlined states

    • Example: 01/31/2026

  2. Select one option:

☐ I am going out of business

I am unregistering ALL Streamlined States

NOTE: Select the second option unless your business is actually closing. The first option is specifically for businesses shutting down entirely.

  1. Still required to hold a sales tax license in certain states?
Check the box next to each one. Those states will be notified and may require you to register with them directly.

  2. Review all information carefully.

  3. Review everything carefully, then click Submit.

Once submitted:

  • Your registration ends immediately.

  • You'll lose access to this SST registration.

  • If you submit this in error, you'll need to start a brand-new registration from scratch — there's no way to undo it.

Special Cases:

Need a date the system doesn't offer?

If you need to cancel a registration for a date that isn't available in SSTRS:

  1. Email Registration@sstgb.org

  2. Include:

    • Your SSTID

    • Requested cancellation date

    • Reason for cancellation

Cancellation dates can't be changed once processed, so double-check the date before sending.

What Happens Next

  • Your CSP (or you, if self-managed) is still responsible for filing and remitting tax through your selected end date — deregistering doesn't erase that obligation.

  • If you're moving to Kintsugi: we'll start filing from the first period after your end date / last day of sale. Share your confirmed closure date with the team so your filing schedule stays on track. See Transitioning from SST to Kintsugi for the full checklist.

  • Confirm any post-deregistration requirements directly with each state.

FAQs

Q: Do I need to do this if I don't use a CSP?

A: If you manage your own SST registrations directly (no CSP), the same steps apply. You'll just skip any CSP coordination steps.

Q: I submitted this by mistake. Can I undo it?

A: No. Once submitted, ending a registration is immediate and irreversible. You'll need to start a new registration for that state from scratch.

Q: Do I need to do anything with the states after I deregister?

A: Yes, if you checked "I need a sales tax registration for this state," those states are notified and may require you to register directly. Follow up with them to avoid a coverage gap.

Q: How long does deregistration take to process?

A: Deregistration through SSTRS is immediate on submission. What takes longer is making sure your next filing period is picked up correctly by your new provider, which is why the deadline above matters if you're switching to Kintsugi.

Q: I'm switching to Kintsugi, is there anything else I need to do?

A: Yes. Deregistering in SSTRS is one part of the switch.

Key Takeaways

  • Deregistration is a controlled, irreversible action once submitted.

  • All filing obligations remain in effect through your selected end date by your CSP. Kintsugi only starts filing on the first period after the end date.

  • Always confirm post-deregistration requirements directly with each state.
