User roles

Learn how to create, update, and assign user roles in DevRev to manage access and permissions for workspace members. Covers default roles, group and individual assignment, and links to related access control configuration.

User roles control the access and permissions of workspace members by defining what objects and actions each member can interact with. Roles are applied to individual users or groups; when a user belongs to multiple groups with conflicting roles, the system grants the highest applicable privilege. For a broader overview of how roles fit into DevRev's permission model, see Access control and Roles.

DevRev includes default roles—Admins, Platform Users, and Support—that are available in every workspace without any configuration. You can create custom roles to extend or restrict access beyond these defaults.

📝 Note: User roles apply to workspace members only. Roles for external customers are managed separately under Settings > Customer Management > Roles. See Customer roles for details.

Create a user role

Go to Settings > User Management > Roles and select + Create new.
Enter the role name and description.
Select an object, such as Ticket or Inbox, to assign permissions.
To restrict permissions, select + Add condition and create a custom condition.
To apply privileges to all subtypes of the object, select Apply to all subtypes.
To configure privileges for specific subtypes:
1. In the subtype section of the object, select Add.
2. Select the subtype to update privileges.
3. To further restrict privileges, add a custom condition as with object roles.
Select Save.

Update a user role

Go to Settings > User Management > Roles and select the role to update.
Select Edit.
Update the role details.
Select Save.

Assign a user role

Roles can be assigned to groups or to individual users. When a role is assigned to a group, all members of that group inherit the role automatically. Roles can also be assigned directly from an individual user's profile.

Go to Settings > User Management > Roles and select the role to assign.
Select Assign role.
To assign the role to a group:
1. Select + Group.
2. Search for and select the groups.
3. Select Assign role.
To assign the role to a user:
1. Select + User.
2. Search for and select the users.
3. Select Assign role.

⚠️ Warning: You cannot assign a role to the All users group.
